Scarlett Johansson Offers Exciting Update on Tower of Terror Movie

Publish date: 2024-07-13

Scarlett Ingrid Johansson aka The Black Widow star provides an update on the long-awaited adaptation.

For years, Disney has been trying to figure out how to make successful films based on their beloved theme park rides.

While the studio has had hits such as the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it has also had flops such as Mission to Mars. A film adaptation of the Tower of Terror attraction is one of the projects in the works.

Scarlett Johansson has been associated with the Twilight Zone-inspired project based on the accelerated drop tower dark ride since 2021. But what is the deal with the film?

The Black Widow actress is now free to discuss upcoming projects following the end of the writers’ and actors’ strikes. She will reportedly play both the lead and producer in the upcoming Tower of Terror film.

In a recent interview with NBC’s TODAY, she revealed the current status of the movie.

It’s based on the ride. Now that the writer’s strike is over, we can get back to work on polishing this script. So it is a massive, huge undertaking. But I am a big Disney fan. I adore the Disney theme parks.

Scarlett Johansson has been working on a Tower of Terror for Disney for several years. The film will be an adaptation of the Twilight Zone-themed attraction that was replaced at Disneyland by the Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout ride.

The Tower of Terror was a much more awesome and timeless ride. Mission Breakout already feels dated. But the Tower of Terror does still exist at Disney World!

So where does the project currently stand? Johansson provided an update during a recent interview on Today, saying:

Taika Waititi has been attached to direct the film, and I assume he still is, but anything can happen. Tower of Terror was previously adapted into a 1997 TV movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst.

Toy Story 4 director and Inside Out scribe Josh Cooley is writing the new adaptation, which was originally written by John August (Big Fish and Frankenweenie).

There is no official synopsis, but the film is said to be about five people in a posh hotel who take an elevator and vanish after it is struck by lightning.

August previously talked about his version of the story, saying: “The central conceit was that the building’s elevator moves through time. A 1920s band leader and a 2020 urban spelunker have to escape through many eras of LA history, stretching back to the Stone Age.

It was a mix of Time Bandits, Groundhog Day, and Back to the Future. I think it would have been fun. But it wasn’t what Disney wanted. (And then the ride closed.)”

That sounds like it would’ve been fun! But it will be interesting to see what Johansson and her creative team come up with.
