The head men's lacrosse coach at Colby College in Maine has died after collapsing on a hotel treadmill. He was 35 years old.

Jack Sandler passed away unexpectedly Thursday while on a recruiting trip out of state, according to information released by Colby.

College President David Greene called Sander's untimely death a 'tragic loss.'

'Jack was only 35 years old and filled with extraordinary promise,' Greene said in a statement.

No additional details have been released on the circumstances of Sandler's death.

Daily Mail Online reached out to the college for comment Monday morning and is awaiting a reply.

Sandler was hired by Colby in 2013 after coaching lacrosse for eight seasons at Skidmore College in upstate New York.

'It was clear he loved the game of lacrosse and coaching, but his real passion was teaching and helping students develop their full potential physically, intellectually, and personally,' Greene wrote in a letter to the Colby community

'We have been incredibly fortunate that Jack has been such an integral part of our community.

'I join others who will miss him greatly, and our thoughts are with his players, colleagues, and family.'

A 2002 graduate of Bates College, where he became the second leading scorer in program history, Sandler went on to coach three United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Honorable Mention All-Americans and the New England Small College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in 2014, reported the Press Herald.

‘He really affected the culture of the lacrosse team,’ Colby director of athletics Tim Wheaton told the Press Herald. ‘They are the embodiment of what he believed in.’

Colby held a memorial for Sandler on campus Friday, attended by current and former lacrosse players, as well as other members of the tight-knit college community, who came out to mourn the young coach's untimely passing.

Sandler, a native of Long Island, is survived by his parents and sister Makenzie.

Funeral services for Sandler were scheduled for Monday morning in Glen Cove, New York. Colby will host a second memorial in the coach's honor sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
