Christian Bale was born in Wales on January 30, 1974, and got his start in London’s theaters. He rose to fame after landing a role in Empire of the Sun, directed by Steven Spielberg, at just 13. Bale starred in the beloved movie musical Newsies in 1992, played Laurie in the 1994 adaptation of Little Women and voiced Thomas in the 1995 Disney animated move Pocahontas.
In 2000, Bale became a household name when he took on the role of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. He later earned critical acclaim for his performance in 2004’s The Machinist, for which he infamously lost 63 pounds.
He followed that up by landing the coveted role of Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, a film that would secure his place in Hollywood history, in 2005. The second installment in the Batman film franchise, The Dark Knight, went on to gross more than $500 million, and the third film, 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, helped make the trilogy one of the highest-grossing film franchises of all time.
The actor appeared in 2007’s I’m Not There, 2008’s Terminator Salvation and 2009’s Public Enemies. In 2011, Bale won the best supporting actor Oscar for his performance in The Fighter. He was nominated for an Academy Award three more times: in 2014 for American Hustle, in 2016 for The Big Short and in 2019 for Vice. In 2022, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Bale married former model Sibi Blažić in January 2000. They welcomed daughter Emmeline in March 2005 and son Joseph in 2014.
